Increasing investment in affordable rural homes

Severn Homes is part of Housing Plus Group, with 12,000 homes, 25,000 customers and 600 employees, Housing Plus Group is a strong, resilient and effective provider of homes and care services throughout Shropshire and Staffordshire.

Since 2012, Housing Plus Group has invested over £20 million in affordable rural homes in Shropshire and Staffordshire. For the Group, this is just the beginning.

Recognising that there isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution to the rural housing crisis, the Group offers affordable rent properties through Severnside Housing, one of Shropshire’s largest social landlords. The Group also offers outright sale, private rent and shared ownership opportunities in the private sector through Severn Homes, which specialises in the marketing and management of these properties.

An example of one of our affordable rent developments is Brook Close in Condover, which has been designed in consultation with local residents and parish councils to offer a tailor-made solution for local housing needs.

When new resident Victoria found out she’d been successful in her affordable rent application, she said “It felt like a new beginning for my girls and I. They could continue their education at the local school and it also meant that this would be affordable so I could save money for my children instead of it being used to fund rising private rent. We are settled now and things are looking positive for the future and I can't wait to see what the next chapter of our lives brings here in the village of Condover.”

Other recent developments have included the Ashes in Morda, Round Meadow in Wem and brand new shared ownership homes in Rodington available today.

But finding suitable sites for sustainable development is difficult. Sarah Boden, chief executive of Housing Plus Group said, “In terms of housing developments £20 million over six years may not sound a lot but it represents a significant investment in rural areas because of the lack of suitable sites and planning restrictions.”

“These homes are making a real difference by ensuring more people can afford to live in the countryside while improving the long-term sustainability of these areas.”

The Group is always looking for suitable development opportunities, particularly in rural areas where affordable housing is scarce. Please contact our developments team if you are interested or know of land available. You can find featured recent developments on our website.
